#45 - Find the best Gelato
This goal wasn’t the best timing after my sugar cleanse – especially because Iwas feeling great afterwards. To ensure I didn’t go crazy I made a game plan. We would ask around for locals & Mirko’s friends favourite gelato shops, try 3 of them and decide after that. This way I still got my gelato fix and wouldn’t overdo it on sugar.
There was a new shop that opened in Mirkos home town of Pergine Valsugana called 18/12. We didn’t get the whole story behind it, but it appeared to be a family run business and was gaining popularity quickly. We stopped for the first gelato here. I had a Nutella and tiramisu cone and it was damn good! Creamy, full of flavour and sweet without being the North American sickly sweet. 10/10 in my books. I should do more food related goals…
Next up was Grom in Trento, the closest city to Mirko. I had been here on my last visit about 4 years ago and it was high up on my list and has great online reviews. It’s a fancier place than 18/12 and the ice creams are kept covered, versus the beautifully displayed traditional style. Here I had the monthly special of fresh strawberries and meringue with white chocolate. It was a tasty cone, but not good as 18/12 in my books. 9/10.
I feared wasting my last gelato on a shitty place, so for number 3 we went back to 18/12! This was peak time, with a line out the door. It was more than worth the wait! As my final send off to the world of perfect gelato I went for the 3 scooper. There is no doubt in my mind that this little shop is the best in the region! If you are travelling through northern Italy please make sure you stop by and eat your face off. You will not regret it!
As for all the sugar- it was noticeable, especially after eating so clean a month prior. I felt the sugar high quick but the crash was long and I would quickly turn into bitchy Tara about an hour afterwards. Then having no energy but wanting more sugar- for me it quite simply is a drug. But how often am I in Italy with the intent on finding the best of the best? So, if I can control my cravings, and only indulge when I want to indulge I don’t see the harm in eating an ice cream every now and then. Buon appetito!
