#7. Make A Meditation Seat

In a class setting I’ve always preferred to meditating while sitting on a bolster. I’m not sure why when there are many specific meditation seats available – but for me and my hips it just works. My practice at home is also very yin based and I’ve been creative in the past supporting myself using what I had around the house. Bolsters typically run between $50-$100 depending on the brand and I wasn’t keen to shell out that much cash when I knew I could up-cycle my own. So, When I had two old pillows and a yoga mat bag with no specific plans, I decided to make a bolster of my very own. This was put together essential for $0 – re-using what I had at home already.

I could have made a liner inside the mat bag – but couldn’t be bothered doing that. Quite simply I took the stuffing from two old pillows and jammed that inside one mat bag. Its firm, supportive and a little wonky – just like me!

While I had envisioned using my new bolster taking me to the deepest of yoga poses, it has proved to be an essential support for my knees and low back as my ankle is healing up. In my seemingly endless state of lying down or sitting with my ankle higher than my knee – its saved my low back from unnecessary strain. It’s a beautiful reminded of my adventure to Kenya last year – as the mat bag was purchased at the Shine Centre last March, and how easy it is to find more than one purpose for the stuff we have lying around.
